The town was originally situated just to the northeast, at the site of Ocotepeque, but it was relocated after the Marchala River, a tributary of the Lempa, overflowed in 1935. Nueva Ocotepeque is a trading centre in a fertile agricultural region. Pop. (2001) 9,167.
