river in central and eastern Cyprus. It rises in the Troodos range and flows in a northeasterly direction toward Nicosia, where it takes an easterly turn through the part of the central lowlands called the Mesaoria Plain toward Famagusta Bay. Although the longest (about 60 miles 【100 km】) in Cyprus, the river is not navigable. Formerly emptying into the bay near the ancient city of Salamis, it now drains into irrigation reservoirs near Akhyritou and Kouklia, west of Famagusta.
