The city lies on the Arousa Inlet across the inlet from Vilagarcia de Arousa, in the coastal zone. Remains of Roman fortifications and of a Phoenician port, La Covasa, attest to early occupation of the site, although the city was not established in its modern sense until the 19th century. Ribeira is a seaside resort and fishing port, with factories for canning seafood, processing fish and flour, and building marine motors. Pop. (2007 est.) mun., 27,181.
