Part of the salt fields were reclaimed for industrial use after World War II, and Sakaide became heavily industrialized. Besides salt, its products include chemicals, petrochemicals, and machinery. A large shipyard is attached to the city's busy commercial port. Mount Shiramine, 4 miles (7 km) to the east, is crowned with the mausoleum of the emperor Sutoku (1119–64). Pop. (2005) 57,266.
