词条 | Solingen |
释义 | Solingen Germany city, North Rhine–Westphalia Land (state), northwestern Germany. It lies along the Wupper River, east of Düsseldorf. First mentioned in 965, it was chartered in 1374. In 1929 Solingen incorporated the equally old towns of Ohligs, Wald, Grafrath, and Hohscheid. The craft of sword making was established there in the Middle Ages, and Solingen shares an international reputation as a cutlery centre with Thiers, France, and Sheffield, England. The production of table cutlery remains important to the local economy. Other products include machinery, motor-vehicle parts, textiles, and foodstuffs. Severely damaged during World War II, the city centre has been rebuilt. Local museums include the Klingenmuseum, which illustrates the historical development of cutting implements, and the Rhineland Museum of Industry. Pop. (2003 est.) 164,543. |
