genus of fernlike cycads (cycad), in the family Zamiaceae, native to coastal regions of southern Africa. The genus contains only a single species, S. eriopus (sometimes called S. paradoxa in older literature), which has a thick tuberlike underground stem, cylindrical cones with more or less vertical ranks of sporophylls, and pinnately compound leaves resembling those of some genera of ferns.
