词条 Crown Point
释义
Crown Point
New York, United States
town (township), Essex county, northeastern New York, U.S., on Lake Champlain (Champlain, Lake), just north of Ticonderoga. Putnam Creek, named for the American Revolutionary War general Israel Putnam (Putnam, Israel), flows through the town, which includes the hamlets of Crown Point, Crown Point Center, and Ironville. In 1609 the French explorer Samuel de Champlain (Champlain, Samuel de) fought Indians of the Iroquois Confederacy there and began the enmity between the Iroquois and the French. Dutch and English traders later traveled in the vicinity. In 1731 the French constructed a stone fort (Fort-Saint-Frédéric) on the peninsula, which they called Point à la Couronne (Crown Point). Despite English-colonial expeditions sent against it, Crown Point remained in French hands until 1759, when it was occupied by forces commanded by Sir Jeffrey (later Lord) Amherst (Amherst, Jeffery Amherst, 1st Baron). He began the construction near Fort-Saint-Frédéric of a larger fort, which was garrisoned but never completed. At the outbreak of the American Revolution the fort was captured by Colonel Seth Warner and a force of Green Mountain Boys. It remained in American hands except for a brief period in 1777 when it was occupied by a detachment of General John Burgoyne's (Burgoyne, John) invading British army. The ruined forts now constitute a state historic site. Champlain Memorial Lighthouse (1911–12) is 7.5 miles (12 km) northeast of the town.
Crown Point is now a summer resort area with some lumber-based and textile industries. Inc. 1868. Area 75 square miles (195 square km). Pop. (1990) 1,963; (2000) 2,119.
