Among Dench's notable television credits were two BBC television series: A Fine Romance (1981–84), which she starred in with her husband since 1971, Michael Williams (died 2001), and the romantic comedy series As Time Goes By (1992–2002). She also performed in many plays adapted for television and in such films as A Room with a View (1986) and A Handful of Dust (1988). She took the role of James Bond's boss, M, in the films GoldenEye (1995), Tomorrow Never Dies (1997), The World Is Not Enough (1999), Die Another Day (2002), Casino Royale (2006), and Quantum of Solace (2008) and played two British queens, the recently widowed Queen Victoria in Mrs. Brown (1997) and Queen Elizabeth I in the comedy Shakespeare in Love (1998). For her role as Elizabeth I, she won an Academy Award for best supporting actress, and, for that of Queen Victoria, she won an Academy Award nomination and the Golden Globe Award for best actress in a drama. She was also nominated for a best actress Oscar for her portrayal of British writer Iris Murdoch (Murdoch, Dame Iris) in Iris (2002). Her performance as the lonely teacher Barbara Covett in Notes on a Scandal (2006) earned Dench another Academy Award nomination for best actress. She was created Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) (British Empire, The Most Excellent Order of the) in 1970 and advanced to Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) in 1988.
