Its city status dates from 1969; it had been a municipality since 1913 and, before that, had been considered an outer adjunct of the port of Dapitan on Dapitan Bay, some 10 miles (16 km) to the northeast. Dipolog long since outstripped the other town in size and importance, however. The city is connected with the main part of Mindanao island via the eastern Zamboanga Peninsula's scanty road system.
