Gladstone (Gladstone, William Ewart), the Victorian prime minister, for 60 years. St. Deiniol's Library was founded by Gladstone in 1895, and there is also a Gladstone museum in the community. Hawarden functions as both a commuter suburb for the city of Chester, England—7 miles (11 km) east—and part of the Deeside industrial region. Pop. (2001) 13,539.
