Its industries include silk weaving and oilseed pressing. Hoshiarpur is the location of the Vishveshvarand Vedic Research Institute and of colleges affiliated with Panjab University. The surrounding area is a fruit-farming region for kinnow (a variety of mandarin orange), mango, guava, and lychee. Pop. (2001) 149,668.
