词条 Oroville
释义
Oroville
California, United States
city, seat (1856) of Butte county, north-central California, U.S. It lies along the Feather River, in the Sacramento Valley, at the foot of the Sierra Nevada, about 75 miles (120 km) north of Sacramento. The city originated in 1850 as the gold-mining (gold rush) camp of Ophir City. By 1872 the lure of gold (oro in Spanish) had attracted large numbers of prospectors, including Chinese from other parts of the state. After the decline of gold mining, citrus fruit and olive groves were extensively cultivated in the area. Oroville is now a shipping point for semitropical fruit and has one of the country's largest olive-canning factories. Historic landmarks include the Chinese Temple (1863); the C.F. Lott Home (1856), which contains period furnishings; and the Butte County Pioneer Museum (1932), a replica gold-rush-era cabin. Oroville's lumber and mining history is preserved at the Forbestown Museum. A community college (1966) is located near the city. Oroville Dam on the Feather River is 6 miles (10 km) northeast. Also nearby are Lake Oroville State Recreation Area, Feather Falls (at 640-feet 【195-metres】 high) in Plumas National Forest, and the Feather River Fish Hatchery. Pop. (1990) 11,960; (2000) 13,004.
