(Old Irish: “story”; pl. scéla), in the Gaelic literature of Ireland, early prose and verse legends of gods and folk heroes, most of which originated during or before the 11th century. Scéla were divided into primary and secondary types. The primary, or most important, were classified according to the actions they celebrated: destructions, cattle raids, navigations, elopements, violent deaths, conflagrations, and others. In modern times these tales have been grouped into cycles according to the characters and periods with which they deal. They comprise (1) the mythological cycle, dealing with immortal beings, (2) the Ulster (Ulster cycle) (Ulaid) cycle, dealing with the Ulster heroes during the reign of King Conor (Conchobar mac Nessa) in the 1st century BC, and (3) the Fenian cycle, dealing mainly with the deeds of Finn MacCumhaill's war band during the reign of Cormac mac Art in the 3rd century.
