city, northeastern Andhra Pradesh state, southern India. It is located at the junction of the Godavari (Godavari River) and Krishna (Krishna River) canal systems. The name of the city was changed to its present form in 1949. Mainly a manufacturing city, Eluru produces textiles and leather products but is most noted for its pile carpets. It is also a centre for trade in rice, oilseeds, tobacco, and sugar. The city has a college affiliated with Andhra University in Waltair. Buddhist archaeological remains are at the nearby village of Pedda Vegi. Pop. (2001) 190,062.
