释义 | Heuss, Theodor German statesman born Jan. 31, 1884, Brackenheim, Ger. died Dec. 12, 1963, Stuttgart, W.Ger. ![]() After receiving a political science degree from the University of Munich (1905), Heuss was an editor on several newspapers and taught at the Hochschule für Politik in Berlin. A member of the Deutsche Demokratische Partei (German Democratic Party, DDP) during the Weimar period, he served in the Reichstag (federal lower house) in 1924–28 and 1930–33. His books were burned as “un-German” after Adolf Hitler's accession to power. After World War II, Heuss helped found the FDP in 1946, headed it from 1949, and served on the parliamentary council (1948–49) that wrote the West German constitution. On Sept. 12, 1949, he was elected president of the new state and held that largely ceremonial post until his retirement in 1959. |
