Chartered in 1307, it was an important trading centre in the 15th and 16th centuries. The village has been famous since the 17th century for its violins, and it has a museum and school of violin making. Zithers and guitars are also made there. Mittenwald is a health and vacation resort and a winter sports centre with a chairlift up the nearby Hoher Kranz Mountain (4,564 feet 【1,391 metres】). Zugspitze, Germany's highest peak at 9,718 feet (2,962 metres), is just west of Mittenwald. Pop. (1999 est.) 8,197.
