foremost zoological garden in Hungary. Founded in 1866, it is administered and funded by the city of Budapest. A public foundation for support was established in 1992. The main entrance and some of the pavilions are fine examples of Art Nouveau design. The zoo has nearly 1,400 specimens of vertebrates, representing more than 350 species; it also maintains a large number of invertebrates. Its specialties are domestic animals and rare and endangered wildlife species, particularly apes and ungulates.
